Looking Beyond the Gurus
Let's be really honest. It's time to step away from the so-called gurus and prominent authors who claim to know the secret meanings of the runes. The truth is, how our ancestors used runes magically is largely lost to us. No single person holds the complete, secret knowledge of this ancient wisdom. Much of it has vanished into the mysteries of time, largely overshadowed by the rise of Christianity.
So, you want to understand the runes? How can you ensure your research is yielding solid results?
1. Check the Author's Sources
First and foremost, investigate where the author or teacher obtained their information. If they suggest secret sources or unique knowledge, it might be time to look elsewhere. Genuine knowledge often comes from personal experience. If an author, like myself, acknowledges that their understanding stems from their encounters with the runes, it opens the door for you to have a unique experience as well.
However, personal experience should not be regarded as unbreakable lore. Additionally, if the teachings originate from authors dating back to the 70s and 80s, take the time to revisit those sources. Many of those authors blended Germanic cultural practices with modern esoteric ideas, presenting them as authentic Norse knowledge.
2. Understanding the Futharks
Exploring Different Runic Alphabets
There are several different futharks—runic alphabets—and the source material varies for each. Unfortunately, we lack clear sources for the meanings of the Elder Futhark, the most widely used runic alphabet. The names, sounds, and meanings we have are mostly reconstructed.
Conversely, the Younger Futhark was still in use during the Middle Ages. We have rune poems that provide valuable insights into its possible meanings. For more information, you can read a separate blog on this here.
3. The Importance of Validation
Authenticity in Rune Work
My guiding principle in rune work is simple: "If it works, you are doing it right." Although no one can claim absolute authenticity, approaching rune work with an open mind is essential. Individuals who grew up in Scandinavian countries may have a deeper, more intuitive understanding of the runes due to cultural memories and traditions.
Ultimately, much of rune magic relies on personal experience. Engaging with a teacher or a group can greatly enhance your learning experience. It provides a safe space for exploration while offering honest feedback, practical tools, and essential knowledge to enrich your journey.
My Journey and Resources
It is only fair to disclose where my information comes from:
I worked with my teacher for 18 months. He possessed a wealth of knowledge in both shamanic practices and Norse mythology. His teacher was Norwegian, sharing his family's runic wisdom tradition.
I have read extensively and translated the rune poems myself.
Many of my friends actively work with the runes, and I regularly discuss my ideas and experiences with them.
Most of my current knowledge is derived from shamanic work with clients and groups, reflecting on how it aligns with what I've learned since I began my exploration in 1998.
A Living Tradition of Rune Magic
I view rune magic as a living tradition. The more we experience, the more we learn, as long as we remain open-minded enough to let the learning continue. There are numerous free resources available on the runes through my blogs, YouTube channel, and website. I encourage you to browse, enjoy, and engage. Whether you agree or disagree, it's important to keep the conversation flowing.
