It is hard getting to grips with finding the narrative between the cards, and it does take time.
Choose one deck that you are really going to get to know. It's fine to use other decks for affirmation work, play, and just because you love multiple decks. But to read with accuracy and flow you need to "know" every card in the deck you are reading with.
If you are feeling anxious or agitated then calm your mind before you start reading. Go for a walk, journal, do some yoga, breath work. Your mind needs to be relaxed, calm, and focused.
A clear focus (which does not have to be a question) with a spread you understand really helps. Choose a spread you know and that makes sense to you-you want your mind to be clear to focus on the cards.
Turn one card at a time. I promise this will make a difference! It forces you to find the narrative rather than jumping ahead, overlooking cards you don't like, or jumping to cards that seem important.
Say what comes to you - though obviously filter with compassion if reading for someone else. If nothing comes, say what you see in the card.
Tune in, what direction is the spread going? What do you expect next?

"Reading" skills
Teaching children to read is a big part of my life. I have a degree in early years education, taught in nurseries, and taught all of my children to read. I have strong views on how a child learns to read, and it reflects my thoughts on reading Tarot.

It helps to balance memorising words that are very regularly used, and teaching phonetics because not every word can be memorised.

Practise, practise, practise!
I find people are looking for a "formulae" to memorise key card combinations. There are a few useful ones to memorise, but if that's ALL you do you will be holding yourself back, because you can't memorise every formula.
You need to understand how to read the card formulas phonetically, just as we can read words we have never come across before because we can read the individual letters. If you follow my flow chart it will help you to read the cards with more flow and narrative.
This work is based on a solid understanding of every card in the deck you are working with.
If there is a group of cards (and so often it is the court cards) that you just don't get then do spend sometime getting to know those cards.
Focus on seeing each card as a range. Understanding its core meaning, but also seeing the best, the worst, and the advice it would offer.
It is this range that is going to help you to connect the narrative.
