How many cards make the perfect Tarot spread?

I’m always a little wary when I see other readers offering Tarot packages and naming how many cards they will use. I understand this is useful in communicating to the client what “value” they get for their money, but in terms of accuracy I think it is unhelpful.

The “right” number of cards is the number that gives you the information you need, within the time available.

On rare occasions I have turned the first card in a reading and given my answer only on that.

If a client is committed to a choice, they ask will it be successful, and the first card is The World, I don’t really need any more information. If a client asks if their partner loves them, and the first card is the Ace of Cups- it’s a yes. But if they ask if their partner is being honest with them and the first card is the 7 of swords the answer is no.

So just sometimes one card says all that needs to be said- but of course its not giving depth or story. The loving partner may be a sex addict and sleeping with other people. The lying partner may be lying to protect their loved one.

To give clarity I think a minimum of three cards is often needed. This allows you to consider the past, present, and likely outcome. To get a narrative flow, and to read the meanings between the cards- adding depth and nuance.

Personally, I love nine cards- with three for the past, three for the present, and three for the most likely outcome. This gives enough cards to really get depth, but not so many cards that I overlook cards.

I like to start a reading my understanding the past, or the present moment, because this allows a client to validate that I am accurate. If all I focus on is the most likely outcome, or advice, how do either of us know that I am tuning in intuitively and with accuracy?

Sometimes in a Tarot reading I do one, two, or three quick readings. Skimming the cards as they confirm what the client has expressed or simply confirm what my intuition has suggested.

Sometimes in a Tarot reading the first card is so on point I talk about it for much of the session.

The right number of cards, or spreads, is the number that allows you access the information that is needed. And in my experience this is as unique and varied as my clients.
